Prayagraj Fort is stunning piece of architecture, built-in 1583, stands at Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam to remind tourists of the city’s rich history. The fort located on the bank of the Yamuna river (Close to Triveni Sangam) & spread over an area of approx. 30000 Square Feet. As per the historian Abul Fazal, it took 45 Yrs time & 20000 labors to build the fort.
The fort is having unique strategic importance hence the under control of the Indian Army till now. The aura of Prayagraj (earlier Allahabad) is said to have impressed Akbar, a famous Mughal Emperor. As a result, he decided to build a grand fort in the area. This fort was built to protect the Akshayavat, a sacred tree to the local Hindus.
The Archaeological Survey of India has designated the Prayagraj fort as a National Monument and keeps its interiors open to tourists. But only a few parts of the fort is accessible for tourists.
People can visit Akshayvat, Patalpuri temple, Saraswati Koop & Ashoka Pillar only inside the fort & the rest of the area is reserved only for army use. The exteriors of the fort reflect the brilliance of Mughal architecture, with significant motifs and inscriptions in some areas.
