Chitrakoot, a peaceful pilgrim town that stretches across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, is steeped in Lord Rama’s devotion. Importantly, Lord Rama spent 11 and a half years of his 14-year exile here. According to the epic Ramayana, Chitrakoot is the location where Lord Rama’s brother Bharat paid him a visit and asked him to return to Ayodhya to rule the kingdom.
Chitrakoot is dotted with many ancient temples, ghats (stepped banks of a river), kunds (sacred ponds), and ashrams. Almost all of which echo the tales of the Hindu epic Ramayana and recount legends of the mighty Lord Rama. Lord Rama lived here with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana. Chitrakoot is flooded with devotees during festival season. Also, Devotees flock to the town to seek the blessings of their God due to the town’s large number of temples.
The town is in proximity to the Mandakini river. The river is also known as River Payasvini. There is several ghats have been constructed on the river’s rim, allowing pilgrims to bathe in the holy river. Evening aarti at these ghats is really mesmerizing. The aarti instils devotional energy in the environment, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the spirit of Chitrakoot.
Chitrakoot’s spiritual legacy dates back several millennia. Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ramcharitmanas, is said to have spent a significant amount of time here as well. Sage Atri and Sati Anasuya are also thought to have meditated in Chitrakoot. Many people believe that the Hindu Gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) took incarnations here.
The name Chitrakoot literally translates as “a hill of many wonders,” and pilgrimage sites such as Kamadgiri, Hanuman Dhara, Janki Kund, Lakshman Pahari, and Devangana are included in the Chitrakoot Parvat Mala (garland of mountains).
Chitrakoot Dham is just 100 kms approx. from Prayagraj. Even people can visit the city by day plan also.
